I visit Ilulissat a lot in my stories. When I lived in Greenland, Ilulissat was the largest town in Qaasuitsup Kommunia. Qaasuitsup was the northern municipality stretching from Kangaatsiaq at the southern border to Qaanaaq at the very top. Ilulissat was the administrative centre. According to Wikipedia 🙂 the population for the municipality was 17,498 in 2013. Jane and I were living in Nuuk (population roughly 18,000 in 2021) at the time. In 2017 Qaasuitsup was split up and Ilulissat and everything above it became Avannaata Kommunia.
Check out the Greenland Missing Persons map to find most of the places mentioned here.
The photo above is taken at the power station at far end of town. I like this photo as it clearly shows the range of coloured houses in Greenland. The photo below is the tourist path to Ilulissat Icefjord. If you’ve read The Shaman’s Daughter you’ll know Luui hid in an ice cave in this area. The ice in the background is constantly moving. Slower in winter, but I wouldn’t walk on it! In summer this is where the action is. 😉
Which reminds me, the title of the post allows for a fun segue into another project I’m working on – one of many. More about these books later, but I’ll finish off with a teaser:
