I write of black lichen – a poem

I write of black lichen

© Christoffer Petersen, 2021

I write of black lichen
Crisp petals of frost-parched flowers
Piercing palms, crisping beneath soles
As we stride across the ankle heathers
To disappear for a while.

I reek of fish entrails
Oils and eye slime juicing over the cuffs
Of my industrial Marigolds
Bought for rinsing dishes
They stir the halibut heads.

I burn with embarrassment
One cultural gaff after another –
Those tongue-lolling huskies
Fawning on sun-smoothed ice
Waiting for me to pull the sledge.

And I dream of darkness
When the sun is at its brightest
Only to regret summer dreams and wishes
As the sun shrinks below the horizon
Never to be seen again.

This… just this!

This is what it’s about. Coming home after a successful run on the sea ice. Truly another shitty day in paradise. I mean, I had to stare at that mountain for a couple of hours before we reached it.

Life is tough.

The tyre tracks are from the “road” between Uummannaq and the settlement of Ikerasak to the south. Yeah, we watched a bit of “Ice Road Truckers” on DVD, then went out and did it. 😉

Chris

P.S.

You can almost(ish) see the position of our house to the left of Uummannaq mountain, between the tails of the two dogs from the left.

Putting it all together

November 23, 2021 by Christoffer Petersen 2 Comments

A classic question authors are often asked is where do you get all your ideas?

Non-writers seem to get overwhelmed at the idea of creating plots and characters. A friend of mine suggested the same, wondering how I keep track of it all. He is a headteacher of a big inner city school. I can’t imagine what he has to keep track of in a day. Actually, as a teacher, I can imagine it, but am just grateful I was never the one doing it.

But as far as ideas go …

Once, when visiting my parents in England, I walked past a movie theater and a security van was picking up the cash.

That was all I needed.

In the space of five minutes I had plotted out a comic caper/heist story with a couple of friends and a battered Land Rover muscling in on the private cash security business.

Ideas are not the problem.

Time is the problem.

I’ll never use all the ideas I have, especially when they keep coming – just can’t turn them off.

It’s the same with creating covers.

Sometimes the story comes first, or I develop it while making a cover, as I did with Hart Attack.

Then, once the render was baked, I could start to put it all together.

I start with blocking in the text in a layer, moving it around a little, then thinking about spacing between the text.

I’m still learning, but try to follow a few rules and be inspired by other covers. I’ve got a long way to go, and am often experimenting, but when I lock in on an idea I usually stick with it.

Of course, even with Led Zeppelin banging out of the speakers while working, I’ve got the story playing in my head.

It feels like one of those pre-visualisations they talk about on Star Wars movies – short, rough-cut movies that provide visual cues for the director etc. prior to filming.

I know, kind of grandiose comparing my story thoughts with the pre-viz of mega movies like Star Wars! 🙂

Written stories work like that too, at least they do for me.

So, Led Zeppelin, render baking, blocking text, and scenes in my head. It’s lots of fun, and I’ll choose it any day over running a school, or any other business.

Deeper – a poem

Deeper

© Christoffer Petersen, 2021

Then, into the stink of it,
Black fingers poised to knit
Into the earth, parting soil flesh
Past the dewed and fresh
stems of grass wet with dawn –
Onwards to finger the devil spawn
of the multi-legged carapace
rippling ribbed armour plates
distracting me from the fever
as I dig deep, deeper and deeper.

Notes…

Like lots of people I rediscovered the garden during the height of the pandemic. And, through the garden, I got that bit closer to nature.

The Magic Fifty

Magic

She was nearly six when Petra introduced Luui to Constable David Maratse.

“He’s grumpy,” Petra said, kneeling beside the shaman’s daughter.

“Grumpy?”

“Quiet, not happy.”

Luui frowned at Maratse. She extended her tiny fist, and then, poof, she splayed her fingers. Maratse’s eyes creased in a smile.

“Magic,” Luui said.

Notes …

This 50 word story is one of my favourites. Back in 2020, I set myself the challenge of writing 50 fifty word stories (title thankfully exempt from the wordcount) and Magic was one of them. No, I didn’t turn 50 that year. I’m still clinging on to the 40s. 🙂 You can find out more on the page for The Greenland 50.

Scenes from a Parking Lot

November 20, 2021 by Christoffer Petersen Leave a Comment

Scenes from a Parking Lot could be a film title from an advant-garde art project, but this blurry photo is one of my favourites. I used my extra long selfie arm (hasn’t everyone got one of those?) to take this photo in a sudden hey, we haven’t got a photo of Anchorage yet moment. We had just arrived from Denali – by train, an experience in itself – and in that parking lot I realised a dream.

No, nothing quirky or illegal, and nothing to do with ticking off all the supermarket parking lots in the world – although … #futurechallenges

No, this was about arriving in Anchorage having dreamed of visiting Anchorage one day ever since I was old enough to know where it was in the world.

So, this silly, blurred photo of Jane and me is one of my favourites as it marks the realisation of a dream, and it was the night of my 43rd birthday. Jane had been ill most of the day, so I was forced … forced I tell you … to see a movie alone. And I forced myself to see the latest Bourne movie. And, if that wasn’t exciting enough, I ate Taco Bell too!

I mean, can you beat that for a birthday celebration? Really? 🙂

I might not be low maintenance but I do have simple tastes.
