May is the month when the melt starts, so it’s best to enjoy the sea ice before it’s too late!
There’s always the mountain, of course.
We tried to get the dogs off the chains as often as possible when they weren’t sledging.
It was a fine line between treating them as working dogs, or as hobby dogs.

Simba didn’t seem to mind. 😉

Still in double digits (hours) we’re nearing the end of the Glacier Beat Kickstarter Campaign! It’s still undecided, bit of a nail biter, but we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, here’s a sneak peak from the book, introducing Ikaajik!
“Ataata’s rifle,” Ikaajik said. “He never uses it.”
“You’re going to use it,” Maratse said. “There are lots of ptarmigan in the mountains.”
“I’m not a hunter,” Ikaajik said. “My eyes…” He tapped the side of his head. “They’re not that good, you know? Maybe I need glasses.”
“Imaqa,” Maratse said. He shrugged, adding, “But you are lucky. The snow is melting, but the birds are still white. They are slow to change colour. Right now, even with bad eyes, you can see a white bird on a black rock. There are enough bullets for you to miss lots of times. You have food for a week. You’ll call me twice a day – when you get up and before you sleep.” Maratse nodded at the sun. “It doesn’t matter when. You’ll call.”
“And if I don’t?”
“I arrest you,” Maratse said.
Did I mention Maratse was in Glacier Beat? 😉

Greenland really is a land of stark contrasts! I wasn’t quite ready to follow Nansen too close to the rocks – we were on the sea ice after all, and it was melting.
But I figured he knew what he was doing! Smart fella is Nansen!
And more pupils now in their twenties! My best teaching experiences were in Greenland with simply the best teenagers in the world! Sorry. I’m sure your teenagers are lovely, but I’m biased!
Also, I can’t quite imagine the forms one has to fill out to take a class onto the sea ice for an end of year photo!

Jaws is in my top three list of favourite movies! Chief Brody is one of my all time favourite characters, and not least because Roy Scheider was just perfect as the aquaphobic police chief living on an island “surrounded by water”. I mean, that right there is a masterclass in character depth! Brilliant.
But on this day, May 6th, 1974, Peter Benchley’s book “Jaws” was published. It’s 49 years old! I’ve read it, and it is quite different to the movie. And then I read it again recently – listening to the audio – and once again, thought about the differences.
I have to say, I grew up with the movie – once my mum allowed me to watch it! – and I do prefer it. But today I just wanted to celebrate the original work, with obligatory images from the move, of course. 😉
In the meantime, I’m having fun with Maratse’s Sea Stories, a little side project to celebrate the occasion. Just like I’ve decided to make November 5th a “V for Vendetta” day. I think May 6th is going to be a new “Jaws” day.
