Authentic Arctic Thrillers
I’ve got a series of blog posts about our first sea kayak trip in Uummannaq starting tomorrow, so I thought I would pop this one in today. Sólja is an Arctic thriller featuring new and familiar characters drawing on many current aspects of Polar politics and global strategy.

I’ve been to a total of three rock concerts in my life, not including the night I saw Weezer at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut when I was a student in Glasgow. It’s not that I don’t like music. I love music, and I love it loud. It’s huge groups of people I struggle with. But, each of those three concerts were Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. The t-shirt I am sporting above was from the Tunnel of Love Tour back in… now where the hell is that ticket?

Anyway. It’s a while ago.
I used to listen to Springsteen over and over, stacking singles on the record player until I had to stack them again. Playing LPs, turning them over, and over again. You get the picture. But it was the stories Bruce told that I couldn’t possibly understand when I was so young, but desperately wanted to. They weren’t songs, they were moments in time when stuff happened, and I was with the characters in his stories, escaping one city, or doing a dangerous job for the money in another, and even working in a factory.
I mean, I had no real clue what working a factory was like, but I listened… like I said… over and over.
I’ve since had a few years without Bruce, but I’ve been rediscovering him and the E Street Band of late, revisiting the older songs, and looking forward to the day I might play my old vinyl LPs again, reading the lyrics from the slip cover, and taking one more Meeting Across the River, or listening to one side of Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. before getting up to flip the record over to the other side.
Hm… nostalgia trip?
Yeah, just a little one. 😉

Extinction? Actually, quite the opposite. Writing about dinosaurs is another wonderful distraction from my crime stories. So, this is what I’m currently working on. Backers of the Kickstarter campaign will be getting Phase Two in the mail in the not too distant future. 😉

My photos don’t capture the colours, but on overcast days, and especially this day in June in Qaanaaq, as the sea ice begins to melt, the water turns a deep turquoise.
I think of a classic Turner painting, with his brown hues. I’m not sure, and I’ve only done a cursory search of the Internet, but I wonder what he would have painted had he been to the Arctic?
