My best day with the dogs – and the day I took the picture I’ve used as an author photo since Seven Graves, One Winter took off. On this day, the dogs and I went further than we’d ever been. And we crossed a small lead in the ice – tiny by Greenland hunter standards, but simply huge by mine, and Balto’s, the new kid on the team. Uummannaq fjord is a few kilometres deep – four at its deepest, I think. 🙂
As you can see, Balto wasn’t convinced we were going to make it.
He was rather reluctant.
But on this rather epic, -30C day, we prevailed!
And, yes, I’ve got video. But I’ll save that for another day. 😉

Your photos help explain what’s happening in the books. Thanks!
Thanks, Anne! I’m having fun digging through the hard drive. 🙂
🤣🤣Brilliant!
Thanks, Graham! It’s only a little lead in the ice, but when you think there’s a few kilometres of water under the ice (four at the deepest point, if I remember right) … it’s enough to get the blood pumping. 😉
Calculating survival time if you did go through, maybe 3.9klms might become incidental?!🤣
Yep. 🙂 I “fell” through a weak patch of sea ice once, stuffing my right leg through to my thigh. That was cold enough. I mean, it’s crazy cold. Not fun. But memorable. 😉
Is Lead pronounced Leed or Led?
Hi Foxinfrocks! (Cool name!) I’ve always pronounced it as “leed”. 🙂
