Wheels within Wheels!

Following on from yesterday’s movie post, I’m very excited about seeing Dune part 2 next week. Originally, I had booked my ticket (singular, Jane’s not interested – too much politics!) for Wednesday, thinking that I couldn’t see the pre-release on Tuesday. But you know what? I forgot I was teaching, so pre-release it is!

Yay!

There’s something about seeing a film you want to see before it’s scheduled for release. Sure, it’s marketing, but I don’t care. However, there is one tiny problem.

I have read and loved all the original Dune books by Frank Herbert. Dune Messiah was a little weird. Children of Dune was very weird, while book 6, Chapterhouse Dune was worth all the weird and much, much more. No spoilers here, but the Bene Tleilax  and what they can do… Well. Brilliant! 😉

I have read lseveral of the Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson prequels. I enjoyed them at first, and then stopped reading them as they just can’t live up to Frank Herbert’s original works. I’ve seen at least one TV miniseries and the David Lynch film, of course. I’ve also played a lot of Dune 2000 and spent lots of hours in the pixel desert!

And I’ve read the books again, and need to read them again soon.

The problem is that in the first of the new Denis Villeneuve movies, I got a little bored. It’s crazy, but when you often hear people complain that the film is just a loose interpretation of the book, it’s simply not the case with Dune part 1. I got bored because the film is so faithful to the book that there were no surprises. None. I knew exactly what was going to happen next.

Now, going into Dune part 2, I’m anticipating it will be the same problem. But now that I know it, I can just relax, enjoy the visuals, and see some worms!

The spice must flow!

  1. I read all the books and I had great expectations about Dune Part 1. I think the film is brilliant and perfect (much much better than the David Lynch’s version). An example of an excellent adaptation. But then again, I though exactly the same about the three films of “Lord of the Rings” and I heard people got really disappointed with them… I guess you can’t please everyone… I’m really looking forward to watch Dune Part 2 (which is still Book 1), but I need to wait a little longer… 🤣

    1. Yes, still book 1! Although I can’t imagine they will make any of the other Dune books into films, unless they merge a lot of books together. Too much weird! 🙂 You’ll have to let me know what you think of Dune 2. 🙂
