Chapter 12 of Seven Graves, One Winter is very much one of Petra’s chapters. The first story she was ever in was Container, in which she tries to restrain Maratse from breaking all kinds of laws to rescue a girl trapped in a – you guessed it – shipping container. While it’s not a competition, since Seven Graves, One Winter, Petra really has been challenging Maratse for the number of books written, and in which she stars as either a lead or a cameo.
Lead or cameo? You might be wondering at that, the choice of terms, words, whatever.
The thing is, I’ve long since stopped thinking of my characters as characters in one story or another. They have become real people. Now, while that might be symptomatic of me spending every day of the last five plus years writing plots for Petra and Maratse, and while it might be crazy, it feels normal.
That, right there, should start alarm bells ringing! 🙂
And it might, if I stopped writing long enough to worry about it. But, as the image above shows, I haven’t stopped… writing, that is. Which is why my grand plans to compile a Greenland Missing Persons Companion have, to date, failed. Petra’s series was supposed to run for just 10 novellas, a handful of novels, and a bunch of short stories. Well, I shot past that a little while ago, maybe even a year ago, when everything is added up. Now I’m just trying to keep up.
Keeping up with Petra is a full-time job!
But this post is supposed to be about Seven Graves, One Winter, and it is. The “problem” is that in the course of writing the novel, Petra’s character developed. And, in much the same way Maratse kind of demanded a book of his own after The Ice Star, so too did Petra.
Alas, if she only wanted one book, it might have been a lot easier! 🙂
