January is always tough, so it’s best not to ask about the “million words” challenge. 😉 I have been busy, though.
The budget for one thing.
And playing around with covers to sell, and this time I mean it!
This falls under the category of indie authors and writer “stuff” as finding covers is a huge part of the indie author business. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m working on a portfolio of covers I will make available for sale for authors looking for a pre-made cover. These are not commissioned works, but pre-made covers in all genres to which I will add the author’s details, the title of the book, and taglines etc.
They are not stock images. I use 3D tools and assets to create original images and scenes. I’ll sell one and one only, so they will be unique to the author who buys them.
I’m not quite ready to launch yet, but I’m getting there.
More importantly – for me – I’m learning to let go. I don’t need to write a story for every cover I design, even though I might want to. It’s ridiculous, I know, but I tend to get rather attached to anything I make. I guess that’s natural, but at some point … you gotta let go!

Great art on this sample cover . . . and a really neat little niche business opportunity!! Are there any other entrepreneurs doing this . . or did you invent this little business yourself? When a buyer purchases one of these, what format is it in that he can ‘customize’ it with his own title and cover text? Is it a Photoshop file in layers? Is the buyer locked in to the positioning and font styles you have chosen? This is cool!

Thanks, Dave. There are lots of people/businesses providing covers for authors. With the boom in indie publishing a tonne of support services popped up. So it’s not new, and there’s lots of competition. 🙂 However, if (more like ‘when’) an author friend and I launch this service, it will be for the cover as seen with the option to change text etc. It will be a flat image with rasterised fonts (non-editable) as we can’t resell the fonts. But the cover can be used in several formats, plus the paperback option which you can’t see, but is basically a wrap around cover of the same image but larger, but a background suitable for text on the back of the book. At the moment I’m just having fun, but have made 5 or 6 covers for sale that I will sell, i.e. won’t keep for myself. Just don’t ask how many covers I have made just for me! 😉
