This is my 500th post since blogging every day from November 2021. What better way to celebrate than with a sledge dog race, Greenland style?
I can’t remember just how many kilometres the team raced over, or what classes there were, but this was serious stuff. Honour and a cash prize was on the line. As a teenager, I was fascinated by the multi-day Iditarod race in Alaska. This was a single race over the course of one day only. And as the dogs neared the finish line, food would be thrown onto the ice as their reward.
The first team got raw seal meat.
Second and possibly third, was rewarded with dry food tipped onto the ice.
Now, how about those polar bear pants, eh?
But the reason we were in Ikerasak that day, wasn’t actually the race. A couple of Danish teacher friends were getting married!
We cheated and took a taxi across the sea ice from Uummannaq. 😉
