Christmas was great. I won the traditional game of Risk, beating one brother-in-law and one nephew. Top of the world! (Insert Rocky doing his thing on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.)
My world was, however, shattered when playing chess with Per, another brother-in-law. I can’t remember how many games we played, but it was a lot. Jane asked Per who won, and was given the reply, “Not Chris.”
Understatement.
But I’m gearing up now! Game on! And all that.
My mum taught me to play chess. She has a Battle of Culloden chess set. When we played I was in that battle. I just lost myself in the figures. If I won it was because the army won, not how I moved the pieces. We went to Greece for a holiday, bought a chess set, and I was playing as Greek gods.
You see the problem?
I didn’t play the game, I played the story.
So when The Queen’s Gambit aired on Netflix I did three things. I bought the book and inhaled it. Such a good book! (Goodreads link) Then I binged the series. Also really, really good. Then I joined Chess.com. I think there was a boom in membership on Chess.com after the Netflix series. I played a few games and thought nothing more of it.
Fast forward to Christmas, getting pulverised by Per, and I’m motivated now. Challenge accepted!
I’m back on Chess.com. I’ve been playing a lot since Christmas – at least 10 games a day (mostly bots), and often until 3 a.m.
I know two things… I’ve lost a lot, but I’m learning.
So… Per… Watch your six! Or your king! I’m coming for you! 🙂
Chris
Yep! Per must be shaking in his boots!🤣
Go for it Orion!(or is it Orpheus…🥺 Beware of strange looks from the women!)
Yep… he won the first game this year. I’ll keep you posted on the second. But…. not looking good. 😉
Ten games a day!!? Up til 3am?!! How in the world do you manage to have the time to write so prolifically? (and WELL!!) :o)
I’m wondering about the same thing! 🙂
