Seven Graves on Sundays! Behind the Scenes 14

Chapter 14 is the only chapter in which Constable Atii Napa makes an appearance in Seven Graves, One Winter, and, cue photo from Nuuk Airport, this is the scene she is in. Yep, I’m talking about the Atii Napa who has since (and before, if that makes sense) become an integral member of the Greenland Missing Persons cast, often getting Petra out of trouble, or simply being there for her. They were never supposed to be best friends. And, back in 2018 when I wrote Seven Graves, I had no idea that I would write more stories with Petra, and sometimes only Petra. My focus was very much on Maratse and how to keep his series going. All the Greenland Missing Persons are set prior to Seven Graves, and all of them were written after.

However, I have grown very fond of Atii over the past few years, and even though the scene in chapter 14 might seem a little strange to readers coming to Seven Graves after the Greenland Missing Persons series, I’m not going to change it. If anything, it’s a marker showing me how far the series – and all the different series – has come. Back in January 2018, Jane and I figured we had just three months in which I could write until I had to go back to teaching. Well, at the end of 2023, it will have been six years. Sure. I’ve taken some part-time jobs to stave off inflation, but on the whole, six years is a pretty good run.

As for Atii? Aside from slipping up every now and again and spelling her name as Atti with two ‘t’s (I mistakenly added both spellings to the spellchecker!), she’s come a long way too. If you haven’t read her back story, then you might enjoy Inter Alia which takes us back to Atii’s second year at the police academy which is largely spent in the field.
