A quick post while I reset after yesterday’s little blunder – a “just released” post for an unpublished book! 🙂 So, here’s an “on this day in 2010” photo from Qaanaaq.
Our house, on the, was built in a hurry, and not entirely suited to the Arctic (basically a Danish summer house). In the winter we could close the doors, because the house rose in tune with the freezing ground. In the summer, the opposite was true – all doors open as the house “sank” as the ground thawed. As I understand it, the house should have been built according to the level of permafrost, but it wasn’t. So, you could say we lived in an elevator!
Second photo is the view from the kitchen window with Herbert Island in the background, and the police officer’s residence – the yellow house. Hmm… inspiration!
