I’m sure I’ve posted this before, but this was my first whale, up close and personal. It’s a fin whale, and I think the next whale up in size is the blue whale! 😉 The shot above is the second photo. The one below is a little blurry because the whale scared the crap out of me when it surfaced! That’s the tip of my paddle in the bottom left-hand corner. The top of the whale’s head is visible in the photo below, but she’s already diving in the photo above. But you can see the tip of the dorsal fin (not the tail) which gives an idea of just how big the whale is.
I turned around to “give chase” and even though I was never going to catch up, I was rewarded with the sight of a baby whale swimming alongside its mother. I was more than a little impossible to calm down for weeks afterwards!

Thanks, Jill. The best thing is that I dropped Jane off at work and told her I was going looking for whales. Came back with the shaky photo to prove it! 🙂
