This is a sneaky random sledge dog of the month post featuring Vitus! It had to be done. 🙂
The Greenlanders had a smile when they saw Vitus in his new outfit. Never mind that I had no idea what I was going to put in the pack – we were only walking in the backyard – it was fun to imagine a longer hike.
Vitus was never lead dog material, but he was a fabulous dog, and a good friend. Nansen usually gets all the credit on this blog, but it takes more than one dog to pull a sledge, and Nansen never did.
Of course, Vitus is also a little special, as he gave me the scar on my right arm when he bit me. It was a hot mess of a fight, and I waded in to sort them out. Note to self… never wade into a sledge dog fight! Vitus bit through a whole load of layers when I stuck my arm in the wrong mouth at the wrong time.
Bless him. Butter wouldn’t melt and all that!
Chris
Looks a great chap!
NB never give dogs chocolate as you did in Of dogs and men, it’s poisonous to them!
Love your stories, thanks
Hi Carol! Thanks. I love Vitus! And you’re dead right about no chocolate for dogs. My dogs ate nothing but fish, seal, whale bones, and the occasional dog house. But I understand it’s the caffeine in chocolate, plus another chemical that makes the dogs vomit, bloat, overheat (?), and, sadly, in some cases even die. Stick to blubber! They love it. 🙂
