I spent a lot of time at this very spot in Uummannaq. Never mind the scenery, the icebergs, the sea ice, distant mountains, and a low flying helicopter, I only had eyes for that big ball of chain. Everything about sledge dogs was a learning curve! Steep! Like climbing a mountain. Before I learned to put two “swivels” on the chain anchored to the rock, and another on the dogs’ collars, I had to go up several times a day to unwind the chain.
Metal in minus degrees ain’t pleasant.
Metal in minus twenty or lower, is just horrible.
So this is one of those greenhorn photos, having just had a team of dogs dumped on us – apparently they don’t come with a manual – and the beginning of a long and expensive game of catch-up.
Early days, fond if a little fraught memories, and fantastic dogs. Not pets. Dogs. 😉
