On Tuesdays and Thursdays helicopters flew from Uummannaq island to the airport at Qaarsut on the mainland (Nuussuaq Peninsula). The bright red livery of the Air Greenland chopper was a common and most welcome sight – even if you weren’t leaving the island, a helicopter meant mail!
But even if it didn’t bring mail, I never got tired of the helicopter flying past our window. The smell of jet fuel blowing up the mountain, however, was another matter.
